President Nicușor Dan has assured Romanians that the country remains safe as the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) met for three hours to assess regional security developments.
In a press statement, Dan summarised the key topics discussed during the session, including a US request to temporarily deploy troops and aircraft on Romanian territory.
- Ziua mondială a proprietății intelectuale
- Hijab-ul a intrat în lumina reflectoarelor la Paris
Dan confirmed that the Pentagon has asked Romania to allow the temporary stationing of American forces and fighter aircraft at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. He emphasised that the systems involved are strictly defensive and do not include weaponry.
“These are defensive systems. They are non-kinetic and not equipped with actual armament.”said President Dan
What CSAT discussed
1. The Middle East conflict
CSAT reviewed military assessments and forecasts regarding the situation in the Middle East. The Foreign Minister presented updates on Romanians in the region, noting that around 5,700 have returned home so far, with roughly 3,700 receiving assistance from Romanian authorities.
Romania continues diplomatic efforts alongside EU partners to help halt the conflict. Dan highlighted a recent meeting between EU representatives and the Gulf Cooperation Council, which condemned Iran’s attacks on Gulf states.
2. Economic impact
The government examined the economic consequences of the conflict, particularly rising global oil prices. The Energy Minister presented an overview, followed by discussions with the Prime Minister and Finance Minister on possible scenarios and Romania’s response.
Dan reminded the public that the government has already introduced a gas price‑cap scheme, effective from 1 April, to protect households and businesses.
3. Temporary US presence in Romania
CSAT approved, pending parliamentary approval, the temporary deployment of:
- aerial refuelling aircraft
- monitoring systems
- satellite communications equipment linked to the Deveselu missile defence shield
The deployment would take place under the existing Romania–United States strategic partnership, similar to arrangements made by other NATO allies. Parliament is expected to debate and vote on the matter later today.
“I want to reassure Romanians that they have no reason to worry. Our country is safe – in fact, even safer.” Dan said
Context
On 5 March, Dan had stated that he would not convene the CSAT unless events in the Middle East posed “an immediate and direct danger” to Romania. Despite that earlier position, today’s meeting was held in light of evolving regional dynamics.
The session was attended by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and several key ministers, including those responsible for defence, internal affairs, foreign affairs, economy and finance.
