Crafting Luxury: Insights from Remus Pǎlimaru, Managing Director at Rosewood Abu Dhabi

In an exclusive interview with Q Magazine, Remus Pălimaru, the general manager of the Rosewood Hotel Abu Dhabi, shares his unique insights on global luxury leadership.

Rosewood Abu Dhabi offers 148 expansive and lavishly designed guest rooms, complemented by 41 sophisticated suites that boast stunning views of the city skyline and the Arabian Gulf.

BEGINNINGS

You’ve had a remarkable career spanning multiple continents, including roles in Japan, the Caribbean, the USA, Europe, and now the UAE. How has working in such diverse cultures shaped your leadership style?

My journey across different cultures has been transformative. Every country, every culture, every team I have worked with has taught me something different and unique. I have learned that true luxury is about human connection—understanding what makes each guest feel valued, welcomed, and at home, no matter where they come from. At Rosewood, we call this Relationship Hospitality, a philosophy that guides me daily.

When we last met, you were in London. What motivated your move to the Rosewood Abu Dhabi, and how did you navigate the transition?

London was an extraordinary chapter in my career, marking the longest time I spent in the same hotel and position during my 25 years in the industry. I had the privilege of working at one of the most renowned Rosewood hotels within our brand, alongside an exceptional team. On a personal note, it’s where my daughter Emma was born, making the city an enduringly special place for my family. We will always feel at home in London.

Rosewood Abu Dhabi offered a unique opportunity to contribute to a city evolving at an exhilarating pace. Abu Dhabi, as a global hub of culture and innovation, aligns perfectly with Rosewood’s vision. The transition has been truly inspiring—embracing the warmth of Emirati hospitality, working with a visionary ownership group, witnessing the dynamism of the market, and collaborating with an extraordinary team have all made this journey both seamless and deeply rewarding.

DIFFERENCES

Having worked in luxury hospitality across different regions, how do you adapt your approach to meet the unique expectations of guests in Abu Dhabi compared to London or other markets?

Listening and observing are fundamental when arriving in a new place. During my first few months, that’s exactly what I focused on. I took the time to listen to my associates, meet with guests, residents, members, and owners, and understand their expectations.

The next step was identifying the obstacles that were hindering my team from fulfilling those expectations. One of the most crucial roles of leadership is to remove such obstacles and ensure that associates are equipped with the tools and support they need to deliver flawless and memorable experiences.

A THOUGHTFUL GESTURE

Rosewood Abu Dhabi is known for its ultra-luxury experience. How do you ensure the hotel stands out in a competitive high-end market like Abu Dhabi?

Authenticity is key. If your associates are genuinely happy and proud to work in your hotel – your guests will feel that in the authenticity of their service execution. It comes from the heart and while the execution may be practiced endless times to be delivered flawlessly, it never feels automatic nor robotic to the guest receiving the service. It feels genuine and authentic and memorable as the famous quote of Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” 

Whether it’s a private dining experience curated by our world-class chefs, an artfully designed suite with breathtaking waterfront views, or an intuitive gesture from our team that makes a guest feel special, we focus on crafting deeply personal experiences. Our commitment to A Sense of Place® ensures that every detail reflects the spirit of Abu Dhabi while maintaining the refined elegance of Rosewood.

How does Rosewood’s global brand identity fit with the local Emirati culture?

Rosewood and Emirati culture share profound values—heritage, hospitality, and a deep respect for tradition. We honor these shared principles by weaving local artistry, cuisine, and customs into every aspect of the guest experience. From our design, which draws inspiration from Abu Dhabi’s rich history, to our culinary creations that showcase regional flavors, we seamlessly blend our global identity with the unique essence of the UAE.

THE EMIRATI PLAN

Abu Dhabi has been actively positioning itself as a global tourism hub, with an ambitious goal to attract 39.3 million visitors and contribute AED 90 billion to its GDP by 2030. How does Rosewood Abu Dhabi align with this vision, and what role does the hotel play in the Emirate’s tourism strategy?

We are so fortunate to be part of this amazing vision of the UAE capital. Department of Culture & Tourism has been in very close collaboration with our hospitality sector, our national carrier Etihad and all other stakeholders gaining insights of what the city needs to keep this momentum and achieve these ambitious goals. We now have a brand new Airport, several new airlines and hundreds of new destinations are being added each year. So each of us hold an important role supporting this strategy. Hotels carry the responsibility to make these guests fall in love with our destination and discover that a few days is far from enough to experience all Abu Dhabi has to offer. 

From the cultural district of world’s most renowned museums, to the white sand beaches of Sadiyaat Island to the heritage sites such as The Grande Mosque and Presidential Palace (Qasr al Watan) to the entertainment island of Yas with all the parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros, Sea World) to best shopping malls, kids entertainment of all ages in the safest and cleanest city in the world…we really have a perfect destination, which our team is responsible to showcase our guests while they are here. 

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced since taking on the role at Rosewood Abu Dhabi, and how have you addressed it?

I am fortunate to have inherited a highly committed and loyal team, with over 45 individuals who have been with us since the hotel first opened its doors in May 2013. However, the greater challenge lies in inspiring people to embark on a transformation journey. Change can be difficult, as routine often feels more comfortable. Leading this hotel through a transformative process has been my most significant challenge. The key to overcoming this has been transparency—consistently communicating the reasons behind the change, articulating its necessity, and vividly portraying the opportunities and benefits awaiting on the other side. It’s crucial to address the fundamental question: What’s in it for them?

LOCAL TALENT

How do you stay connected to the local community in Abu Dhabi, and why is this important for a luxury brand like Rosewood?

Community engagement is at the heart of our philosophy. We support local artisans, partner with cultural institutions, and contribute to meaningful initiatives that enrich the city. This not only fosters goodwill but also strengthens our authenticity as a brand that genuinely belongs to Abu Dhabi. We are also fortunate to employ talented Emiratis whom we learn from every day. 

As someone who was born in Romania and has built a successful global career in hospitality, what advice would you offer to young Romanian professionals aspiring to achieve similar success on the international stage?

Be curious, be adaptable, and never stop learning. Hospitality is about people—if you master the art of connecting with others, opportunities will follow. A good amount of emotional intelligence, patience and empathy is needed to be successful.

Work hard, embrace challenges, and most importantly, you need to find excitement and passion about creating exceptional experiences.

What’s next for Rosewood Abu Dhabi under your leadership?

As mentioned above, we are on a transformative journey with very exciting perspectives. Five months ago we transformed our Lobby Lounge into a French Patisserie in collaboration with Pierre Hermé and Espresso Lab. Currently we are in the process of refining our Hidden Bar, which has been a famous destination for locals and repeat guests – we will reveal the newly designed product at the end of April. La Cava, our wine cellar is also going through a beautiful transformation as we partnered with Bishop, a renowned design company out of Miami and Dubai, to give this space a beautiful uplift. This unique and seductive space is all about the best wines in the world, Spanish cuts, cigars and whiskey.

What is the role of sustainability in luxury hospitality, and how is Rosewood Abu Dhabi addressing this?

Luxury and sustainability go hand in hand. We are committed to responsible tourism—whether through reducing our environmental footprint, sourcing locally, or implementing energy-efficient practices. We are constantly exploring ways to integrate sustainability into our operations without compromising on elegance and comfort. Just last week we launched a partnership with BE WTR as they built a filtration plant in our underground parking lot. This joint venture is giving us tremendous savings as we eliminated all single-use plastic and glass. 

AI AT THE HOTEL

Technology is transforming the guest experience. What innovations are you most excited about, and how are you leveraging technology at Rosewood?

Technology should complement, not replace, human connection.

We are investing in smart room systems, AI-driven personalization, and seamless digital concierge services to enhance convenience while preserving the genuine warmth and authenticity of true hospitality

You are fluent in multiple languages, including Romanian, Danish, English, German, and Japanese. Have you managed to master Arabic yet?

Sadly, for me, all my local colleagues and counterparts are fluent in English, so it’s quite difficult to get exposed to Arabic. That being said, we are all making an effort to learn at least the basics of greeting, polite verbiage, useful daily words. 

Having lived and worked in so many countries, do you have a favorite destination and why?

Over the years I always learnt to ensure that my favorite destination is always the place I live in. My approach to this personal philosophy started when I lived in Cayman Islands. I thought – when in my life will I ever have the chance to live on such a beautiful island, so let me enjoy it like it’s my only time. I did the same for every move I had afterwards. I love living in Abu Dhabi, and I cannot see myself moving away anytime soon. It is a safe, clean country with outstanding education facilities, world class healthcare, warm and welcoming people – fast pacing economy with visionary leaders. I feel very privileged to live here.
